**Mumbai, India** – Cricket’s popularity in India is undeniable, but few know the full history of the sport’s international beginnings. While many associate the first international match with the 1877 Australia vs. England Test, the actual first international match occurred much earlier.

A recently unearthed article reveals that the inaugural international cricket match took place in 1844 in New York City, between the United States and Canada. Canada emerged victorious, winning by 23 runs. This match also marks the first international sporting contest between two nations. The first official Test match, however, did take place between Australia and England in Melbourne in March 1877, with Australia winning by 45 runs. The first Cricket World Cup followed much later, held in England in June 1975, with the West Indies claiming the title.

The International Cricket Council (ICC), initially formed as the Imperial Cricket Conference in 1909 with representatives from Australia, England, and South Africa, later evolved into the ICC we know today, with its headquarters currently in Dubai.

India’s own entry into the international arena began on June 25th, 1932, at Lord’s in London against England. Captained by CK Nayudu, India suffered a 158-run defeat. The first international match held on Indian soil occurred in Mumbai in 1933, also against England. This historical information sheds light on the rich and often surprising history of international cricket.
