**Washington, D.C.** – NASA is challenging innovators worldwide to design a life-saving lunar rescue system capable of retrieving astronauts stranded on the challenging lunar surface. The agency is offering a top prize of $20,000, part of a total $45,000 prize pool, for the winning design.
This initiative is crucial to NASA’s ambitious Artemis program, aiming to re-establish a sustained human presence on the Moon. The lunar terrain, however, presents significant challenges. Astronauts could become stranded amidst rugged terrain featuring sharp rocks, deep craters, and steep slopes.
The winning design must be capable of transporting a fully-suited astronaut up to 2 kilometers across the uneven lunar surface, including inclines of up to 20 degrees, without requiring a rover. While lunar gravity reduces the astronaut’s weight, manual transport remains impractical.
“The harsh and unforgiving environment of the Moon demands innovative solutions,” explained NASA official Sara Douglas. The chosen Artemis mission landing site, while rich in potential water ice resources, presents significant surface obstacles. A reliable rescue system is vital for safely returning an injured or medically compromised astronaut to a lander.
The competition, titled “South Pole Safety Challenge: Lunar Rescue System,” is open until January 23, 2025. Submissions must be made through the HeroX portal. With the Artemis mission launch slated for September 2026, NASA hopes this competition will yield crucial technology to ensure astronaut safety on the Moon.
