**Bangkok, December 4, 2024** – A major Myanmar ethnic rebel group, the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA), has announced its willingness to participate in Beijing-mediated peace talks with the country’s military junta. The decision comes after over a year of intensified fighting along the Chinese border, significantly impacting the region.
The MNDAA, possessing an estimated 8,000 fighters, has been engaged in a long-standing conflict with the Myanmar military for autonomy in northern Shan state. Last year, the MNDAA, alongside allied rebel groups, launched a major offensive, capturing key areas including ruby mines and a crucial trade route to China. This latest announcement follows a similar statement last week from the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA), another MNDAA ally.
The MNDAA declared an immediate ceasefire and expressed readiness to engage in dialogue with the military junta, focusing on resolving conflicts, particularly concerning the strategic city of Lashio, which they captured in August. The group stated its intention to send a high-level delegation to negotiate a political solution.
While the junta spokesperson, Zaw Min Tun, acknowledged the statements from the MNDAA and TNLA, he expressed skepticism regarding their practical implementation on the ground. He noted that junta chief Min Aung Hlaing discussed peace procedures with Chinese Premier Li Qiang last month.
China, a major ally and arms supplier to the junta, has welcomed the MNDAA’s announcement and pledged continued support for the peace process. However, the Arakan Army (AA), another key rebel group, remains engaged in ongoing conflict in western Rakhine state.
Analysts, like Jason Tower of the United States Institute of Peace, attribute the MNDAA’s move to increasing Chinese influence, suggesting that without Chinese pressure, such a statement would be unlikely. China’s recent actions, including cutting off essential services to the Kokang region following Lashio’s capture, underscore its leverage in the conflict. The ongoing situation highlights the complex interplay of regional powers and the protracted struggle for peace in Myanmar.
