Fri Dec 06 00:27:22 UTC 2024: ## UnitedHealthcare CEO Gunned Down in Manhattan; Suspect Still at Large
**New York, NY –** Brian Thompson, 50, CEO of UnitedHealthcare, was fatally shot Wednesday morning in a targeted attack outside a Manhattan hotel. The gunman, who remains at large, is believed to have had at least some firearms training and used a silenced weapon.
Police released images of a person of interest, captured on security footage in a nearby hostel. The suspect, wearing a hooded jacket and mask, fled the scene on a bicycle after shooting Thompson multiple times. Investigators recovered 9mm shell casings, a cell phone, and items from a nearby Starbucks believed to have been discarded by the shooter.
Chillingly, the words “deny,” “defend,” and “depose” – echoing the phrase “delay, deny, defend” often used to criticize insurance industry practices – were found written on the ammunition. This has led investigators to explore a possible motive related to UnitedHealthcare’s practices.
Thompson’s wife revealed he had received threats, possibly connected to insurance coverage issues. The shooting occurred just as Thompson was walking to the company’s annual investor conference. The conference was subsequently cut short.
The NYPD is pursuing numerous leads, including tips from the public, and is utilizing various resources like drones and K-9 units in the search. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward. UnitedHealthcare, the largest provider of Medicare Advantage plans in the U.S., is cooperating fully with the investigation.
