NEW DELHI – India commemorated the 69th Mahaparinirvan Diwas on December 6th, marking the death anniversary of Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, the chief architect of the Indian Constitution and a champion of social justice. Events were held nationwide, most notably at Prerna Sthal in the Parliament House Complex and at Chaitya Bhoomi in Mumbai, Dr. Ambedkar’s final resting place, where thousands gathered to pay their respects.
Dr. Ambedkar, who passed away in 1956, dedicated his life to fighting caste discrimination and uplifting marginalized communities. His contributions to Indian society are widely celebrated, and his legacy continues to inspire social reform movements. Maharashtra observed the day as a public holiday.
This year’s commemorations included floral tributes, the chanting of “Baba Saheb Amar Rahe,” and reflections on Dr. Ambedkar’s teachings and enduring influence on India’s pursuit of equality and fraternity. His profound impact is underscored by his pivotal role in drafting the Indian Constitution, a document that enshrines these very principles. Dr. Ambedkar’s achievements also include earning doctorates from Columbia University and the University of London, and leading the historic Mahad Satyagraha. He was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1990.
