Fri Dec 06 04:16:00 UTC 2024: ## Postpartum Mother Dies After Hospital Lift Crash in Meerut

**Meerut, Uttar Pradesh –** A 30-year-old woman, Karishma, died Thursday after a hospital lift malfunctioned, causing her to suffer fatal head injuries. The incident occurred at Capital Hospital in Shastri Nagar, Meerut, just after Karishma had given birth via Cesarean section and was being transferred from the delivery room to a general ward.

Witnesses reported that the lift plummeted after its belt snapped, trapping Karishma on a stretcher. The resulting commotion prompted a rescue effort as others trapped in the lift called for help. Hospital staff eventually freed the trapped individuals, but Karishma was rushed to another hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.

Enraged relatives of the victim vandalized the hospital following the tragedy, causing hospital staff to flee. Local police quickly intervened and restored order, while Karishma’s newborn baby girl was transferred to a different hospital’s nursery.

Authorities have responded swiftly, registering a case against the hospital’s doctor, manager, and staff at the Lohia Nagar police station. The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) ordered the evacuation of 15 patients from Capital Hospital, which has since been sealed pending investigation. A joint police and CMO investigation team has been formed to determine the cause of the lift failure and assess responsibility.
