**Bengaluru, December 6, 2024** – In a surprising turn of events, H.L. Nagaraj, a senior Karnataka Administrative Services (KAS) officer, will resign from his position as Additional Deputy Commissioner of Mandya district to become a monk. The 49-year-old, a 2004-batch KAS officer with an MPhil and PhD in Economics, will assume leadership of the Vishwa Vokkaligara Mahasamsthana in Bengaluru on December 14th.
Nagaraj’s decision, announced today, follows recent controversy surrounding the mutt’s incumbent seer’s remarks about disenfranchising Muslims. However, mutt authorities insist the two events are unrelated, stating Nagaraj was already slated to take over.
Known for administrative reforms implemented during his career, Nagaraj cited a desire to promote the “Vishwa Manava” (universal human) philosophy of poet laureate Kuvempu as his motivation. He intends to broaden the definition of “Vokkaliga” to encompass all those contributing to food production and to foster harmonious inter-community relations. He also plans to popularize Kuvempu’s “Mantra Mangalya,” a simple marriage tradition aimed at alleviating financial burdens on families.
Nagaraj believes his role as a monk will allow him greater freedom to address social issues and advocate for the people through spiritual leadership. He stated that the restrictions inherent in government service would limit his ability to effect change as effectively as he could as a religious leader. The decision, he added, was not sudden, but a culmination of a long-held desire for a spiritual life.
