**Madurai, Tamil Nadu, December 6, 2024** – A new biography, *Karumuttu Thiagaraja Chettiar, The Textile King*, sheds light on the remarkable life of Karumuttu Thiagaraja Chettiar, a prominent figure in South India’s textile industry and a significant philanthropist. Born in 1893, Chettiar, known as “Kalaithanthai” (artist), defied family tradition by venturing into textiles instead of moneylending.
After gaining experience in Ceylon, Chettiar returned to India and founded Sree Meenakshi Mills in 1927, overcoming financial challenges including the Great Depression, by demonstrating shrewd business acumen and resilience. He built a textile empire encompassing 16 mills, becoming the largest mill owner in South India by 1940. His success was marked by financial prudence and a willingness to challenge government regulations to protect the industry.
Beyond his business achievements, Chettiar’s legacy lies in his significant contributions to education. He established numerous institutions, including Thiagarajar Arts College and Thiagarajar College of Engineering, investing over ₹60 million in these endeavors. He also championed Tamil language and culture, founding the Tamil daily newspaper, *Tamil Nadu*. His commitment to education extended to establishing a teacher training college, a model high school, a management school, and several primary schools.
Chettiar’s influence extended to journalism, becoming one of the first Nagarathar to work as a full-time journalist for an English daily in Ceylon, reporting on the plight of plantation workers. He was also involved in banking and insurance, holding significant shares in various companies. A staunch vegetarian and follower of the Shaivite tradition, he passed away on July 29, 1974, leaving behind a legacy of business acumen, philanthropic generosity, and unwavering commitment to Tamil culture and education.
