**Gaza City, Palestine** – Israeli airstrikes across the Gaza Strip have killed at least 39 Palestinians, including 21 in a single attack on a displacement camp in al-Mawasi, near Khan Younis, medics reported Thursday. The strike, which targeted tents sheltering thousands of displaced families, left the area ablaze, with residents carrying charred bodies from the wreckage. Witnesses described scenes of devastation, with burning tents, exploded gas canisters, and scattered belongings.
The attack came on the same day that Amnesty International released a report accusing Israel of committing genocide in Gaza. The report details widespread attacks against civilians, including those in displacement camps, which Israel has designated as “safe zones” despite repeated attacks. Israel vehemently rejected the accusations, denouncing Amnesty International as “a deplorable and fanatical organization.” The United States also rejected the genocide claim.
While Israel claimed the al-Mawasi strike targeted Hamas members, witnesses and mourners said the attack demonstrated the continued danger faced by civilians, even in areas ostensibly offering refuge. Further strikes hit Gaza City and Rafah, resulting in additional casualties. A drone attack on Kamal Adwan Hospital in Beit Lahiya killed a 16-year-old wheelchair-bound boy and wounded several others, including medical personnel. Three hospitals in northern Gaza have been repeatedly attacked since October.
The ongoing siege of northern Gaza, coupled with the relentless attacks, has created a dire humanitarian crisis, with famine looming and the healthcare system on the verge of collapse.
Despite the escalating violence, a Hamas official, Basem Naim, stated that international mediation efforts to secure a ceasefire have resumed, offering a glimmer of hope amidst the devastation. Negotiations, previously stalled, are focusing on ending the fighting, securing the release of captives from Gaza, and freeing Palestinian prisoners held in Israel. However, the latest attacks cast a heavy shadow on the prospects for peace. The conflict, which began in October, has already claimed over 44,500 Palestinian lives.
