**New Delhi** – India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has advised Indian businesses to adopt a balanced approach towards trade with China, warning against over-reliance on its supply chains. While acknowledging China’s significant role in global manufacturing (accounting for 32-33% of the total), Jaishankar emphasized the need to avoid excessive dependence that could compromise India’s national interests.
Speaking at an ASSOCHAM event, Jaishankar clarified that he wasn’t advocating for a complete cessation of business with China. However, he stressed the importance of careful consideration of long-term implications and potential risks associated with over-dependence. He cautioned that unchecked reliance could lead to the hollowing out of Indian industries.
The minister’s remarks come amidst the backdrop of the recent resolution of the four-and-a-half-year border standoff at the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh. Jaishankar noted that progress has been made, but further discussions with China are necessary.
He also addressed concerns about disruptions in Red Sea shipping lanes due to the volatile situation in West Asia. Jaishankar confirmed that Indian trade has been impacted and that the country has taken steps, including deploying naval ships, to mitigate the situation. He highlighted the increased transportation costs associated with exploring alternative supply routes and revealed ongoing diplomatic efforts with key players such as Iran and Israel to ensure stability and protect India’s economic interests. Jaishankar stressed the need for restraint, de-escalation, a ceasefire, and negotiations to safeguard India’s economic wellbeing.
