Thu Dec 05 19:50:00 UTC 2024: ## US Warns of Ongoing Chinese Hacking Operation, Recommends Encryption for Protection

**Washington, D.C.** – Federal officials issued a stark warning Tuesday about an ongoing massive Chinese hacking operation targeting American telecommunications companies. The operation, dubbed “Salt Typhoon” by Microsoft, has compromised AT&T, Verizon, and Lumen Technologies, granting Chinese intelligence access to call records, text messages, and in some cases, live phone calls. Officials emphasized that the threat persists and urged Americans to utilize encryption to protect their communications.

The compromised data primarily includes phone records and text messages, although some live calls were also intercepted. The impact extended to individuals associated with both the Trump and Biden presidential campaigns, as well as the office of Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer.

The government’s solution centers on encryption, a technology that scrambles messages, rendering them unintelligible to unauthorized parties. While law enforcement agencies have historically raised concerns about encryption hindering investigations, officials highlighted its crucial role in safeguarding communications from state-sponsored hacking.

For everyday users, utilizing encrypted messaging apps like Signal and WhatsApp is recommended. These apps employ end-to-end encryption, meaning only the sender and recipient possess the key to decrypt the messages, preventing access by the app provider or hackers. iMessage and Google Messages also offer end-to-end encryption when users communicate within their respective platforms, but this protection is lost when messaging across platforms. Encrypted calling is available through Google Fi and FaceTime.

While the messaging app Telegram offers an encryption option, experts caution against its use due to concerns regarding its open-source code and default settings.

China has vehemently denied any involvement in the hacking operation, a stance consistent with its past responses to similar accusations.

The ongoing nature of the threat underscores the need for increased digital security awareness and proactive measures to protect sensitive communications. The government’s recommendation for widespread encryption adoption highlights the escalating cyber warfare landscape and the crucial role of technological safeguards in national security.
