Fri Dec 06 17:09:48 UTC 2024: ## Bumrah Achieves Historic Milestone on Birthday
**Adelaide, Australia:** Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah celebrated his 31st birthday by achieving a remarkable feat in the second Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test against Australia. He became the first Indian fast bowler to take 50 Test wickets in a calendar year, dismissing Australian opener Usman Khawaja for 13 runs on Day 1 of the pink-ball Test at the Adelaide Oval.
This achievement places Bumrah in an elite group, following in the footsteps of Kapil Dev (who achieved the feat twice, in 1979 and 1983) and Zaheer Khan (2002) as the only Indian fast bowlers to reach this milestone in a single calendar year. Bumrah reached 50 wickets in just 11 Tests played in 2024. While Bumrah excelled, other Indian pacers struggled to make an impact on the first day. Despite India’s relatively low first-innings score of 180, Bumrah’s performance provided a significant boost to the team’s morale. In his 11 overs, Bumrah conceded only 13 runs, including four maiden overs.
The record for the most Test wickets by a fast bowler in a calendar year remains with Australia’s Dennis Lillee (85 wickets in 1981), while the overall record belongs to Shane Warne (96 wickets in 2005).
