**Adelaide, Australia –** Australia ended Day 1 of the second Test against India in a commanding position, holding a 94-run lead after bowling India out for 180 and reaching 86/1 at stumps.
India, winning the toss and electing to bat first, struggled against a potent Australian bowling attack. Mitch Starc led the charge, taking a career-best 6 wickets for 48 runs, including the key wickets of Virat Kohli and KL Rahul. Pat Cummins and Scott Boland each claimed two wickets apiece. Nitish Reddy top-scored for India with a 42-run knock. Rohit Sharma’s return to the team was short-lived, dismissed for 3 runs. Rishabh Pant contributed a 21-run innings before falling to a Cummins bouncer.
Despite a late flourish from Reddy and Ravichandran Ashwin, India’s innings faltered, failing to reach a substantial total.
Australia’s response was significantly more confident. Usman Khawaja was the only wicket to fall, dismissed by Jasprit Bumrah. Marnus Labuschagne and Nathan McAndrew remained unbeaten at the close of play, setting the stage for a strong Australian push on Day 2.
The Adelaide Oval pitch, described by curator Damian Gough as having plenty of grass, proved conducive to swing bowling, suggesting further challenges for India in the coming days. The match is being played under lights with a pink ball. The second Test is a crucial encounter in the five-match series, with India having already won the first Test in Perth.
