**Gaya, Bihar:** Chiriawan, a village in Gaya district of Bihar, is making headlines for its extraordinary dedication to the Indian Armed Forces. Known as the “village of soldiers,” Chiriawan boasts a remarkable tradition where young men vow to join the military before marriage, seeking blessings from a local deity before embarking on their rigorous training.
The village’s unique custom is deeply rooted in its history, with multiple generations of families having served in the armed forces. Over 100 residents currently serve in the Army, Navy, and Air Force. This dedication extends beyond men, with women also actively pursuing careers in the military. While residents are primarily farmers, a significant portion of the youth dedicate themselves to achieving their military aspirations.
Monu Kumar, a villager, explains that the tradition involves seeking blessings at a village temple before undertaking the physical and mental preparation for recruitment exams. Alok Ranjan, a recent Agniveer recruit, attributes his success to the deity’s blessings. Retired Lieutenant Shiv Shankar Singh, a Chiriawan native who served for 30 years, highlights the village’s unwavering commitment to the armed forces, noting that the number of soldiers hailing from the village is almost impossible to count.
