Wed Dec 04 16:06:45 UTC 2024: ## UnitedHealthcare CEO Gunned Down in Targeted Attack in NYC

**New York, NY** – Brian Thompson, CEO of UnitedHealthcare, was fatally shot in a targeted attack in Midtown Manhattan on Wednesday morning, according to the New York Police Department (NYPD). The 6:40 AM shooting occurred as Thompson was walking towards the New York Hilton Hotel.

NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch described the attack as “brazen” and confirmed it was not a random act. She stated that the suspect appeared to have been lying in wait. Police have released surveillance images of a white male suspect, seen wearing a grey backpack, fleeing the scene on foot before getting on an e-bike and riding through Central Park. The video shows the suspect firing multiple shots at Thompson from close range. Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny noted the suspect’s proficiency with a firearm.

Thompson’s wife, Paulette, told NBC News that her husband had mentioned receiving threats, possibly related to insurance coverage disputes. The NYPD is currently interviewing colleagues and family to establish a motive.

Mayor Eric Adams stated that the police are reviewing evidence, including video footage from the scene. A $10,000 reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest.

UnitedHealth Group, the parent company of UnitedHealthcare, released a statement expressing deep sadness and shock at Thompson’s death, calling him a highly respected colleague and friend. Governors Kathy Hochul (New York) and Tim Walz (Minnesota) also issued statements condemning the killing. UnitedHealthcare provides care to 148 million people in the US and South America. The investigation is ongoing.
