**NEW YORK, December 4, 2024** – Brian Thompson, CEO of UnitedHealthcare, was fatally shot this morning in a targeted attack outside the New York Hilton Midtown. The 50-year-old executive was on his way to address an investor conference when the shooting occurred around 6:45 a.m. The shooter, who fled on foot and then by e-bike into Central Park, remains at large.
New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch described the incident as a “brazen, targeted attack,” a sentiment echoed by Governor Kathy Hochul. Despite a large police presence and numerous security cameras in the area, no arrests have been made. While authorities believe the attack was targeted, a motive has yet to be established. Mayor Eric Adams stated that police are reviewing evidence from the scene.
The shooting occurred in a busy area of Manhattan, near popular tourist attractions. The incident forced the early termination of UnitedHealthcare’s investor conference, which was intended to update Wall Street on the company’s future plans. UnitedHealthcare, the insurance arm of UnitedHealth Group Inc., is the largest provider of Medicare Advantage plans in the U.S.
Thompson had been with UnitedHealth Group since 2004 and served as CEO for over three years. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz expressed his condolences, calling the news “horrifying.” The investigation is ongoing.
