Wed Dec 04 20:48:25 UTC 2024: ## West Bengal Ruling Party Wins By-Elections Despite Public Outrage

**Kolkata, India –** The Trinamool Congress (TMC), the ruling party in West Bengal, has secured a landslide victory in all six Assembly by-elections, despite widespread protests following the rape and murder of a doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital. The by-election results, announced on December 5th, 2024, saw the TMC not only retain its existing seats but also capture Madarihat, a BJP stronghold. In some constituencies, the TMC’s margin of victory exceeded 130,000 votes.

For over two months, large-scale protests demanding justice for the murdered doctor gripped Kolkata. Public anger was directed at the state government for its perceived failure to provide adequate security and alleged attempts to cover up the crime. The protests led to the removal of the Kolkata Police Commissioner and state health department officials.

However, the by-election results highlight the Opposition’s failure to capitalize on public discontent. While citizen groups organized the protests independently of political parties, the opposition parties’ efforts to mobilize voters proved ineffective.

Analysts attribute the TMC’s success to several factors, including the party’s robust booth-level organization, cash incentive schemes, and the Opposition’s inability to present a united front against the ruling party. The BJP, CPI(M)-led Left Front, and Congress all suffered losses, with the BJP’s vote share continuing its decline since the 2021 Assembly elections.

While the TMC’s electoral dominance is undeniable, the protests themselves are viewed as significant. They represent a burgeoning civil society movement in a state historically characterized by stark political divisions, demonstrating a newfound willingness among citizens to publicly challenge the government. The long-term political impact of these protests remains to be seen.
