Wed Dec 04 15:58:00 UTC 2024: ## SHRC Orders Inspection of Valiathura Hospital to Restart Inpatient Services

**Thiruvananthapuram, December 4, 2024** – The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has ordered an inspection of the Coastal Speciality Hospital in Valiathura to determine the resources needed to reinstate its inpatient and 24-hour services. The order, issued by SHRC chairperson Alexander Thomas, follows a petition from resident Jerome Meeran.

The DMO has been instructed to submit a comprehensive report within six months, detailing the hospital’s current staffing levels (doctors, nurses, and other staff), the number of beds, and the infrastructure required for resuming inpatient care. The DMO’s initial report indicated a need for three additional doctors to handle inpatient services, citing structural issues and seepage within the building as obstacles.

However, the city Corporation Secretary informed the commission that according to a October 25, 2023, circular from the Local Self-Government department, the hospital is only permitted to employ one doctor and one paramedical staff member under the Corporation’s purview. This discrepancy highlights the challenges faced in restoring the hospital’s full functionality. The SHRC’s intervention aims to ensure the hospital can provide adequate healthcare to the Valiathura community.
