Wed Dec 04 18:40:24 UTC 2024: ## Indian Paper Industry Faces Collapse Due to Lack of Government Support

**Chennai, December 5, 2024** – The Indian paper industry is on the brink of collapse due to a lack of government support and policies, according to the Indian Agro & Recycled Paper Mills Association (IARPMA). IARPMA, representing paper mills utilizing agricultural residues, claims the government’s promises to utilize agricultural waste are unfulfilled. The industry, a major employer in rural areas, is struggling to acquire crucial raw materials like wheat straw, rice straw, and bagasse.

At a press conference, IARPMA President Pramod Agrawal highlighted the dire financial situation of numerous mills. He urged the government for policy intervention to address the crisis. The association’s Vice President (South India Kraft Paper Mills Association), Mr. Nandikeshwar, advocated for eliminating the 2.5% import duty on waste paper to ease the burden on mills. Dr. Bipin Thapliyal, IARPMA Secretary General, further criticized the uncontrolled import of finished paper from ASEAN countries under various trade agreements, adding to the industry’s woes. The IARPMA is calling for immediate policy changes to ensure the survival of this vital sector.
