Thu Dec 05 14:30:43 UTC 2024: ## Andhra Cricket Legends Reunite, Highlight Need for Former Players’ Recognition
**Hyderabad, December 4, 2024** – A group of former Andhra cricketers, including several who played in an era of meager pay and challenging conditions, recently reunited at Hyderabad’s Gymkhana Ground to watch an Andhra-Kerala match. The gathering, which included former India spinner S.L. Venkatapathi Raju, sparked nostalgic reflections on their careers. Many of these players, who now hold jobs in Hyderabad, fondly recalled their passion for the game despite limited resources, often playing for as little as ₹5 a day.
J.S. Patel, a former Andhra all-rounder, emphasized the dedication required to play in an era against formidable opponents like Hyderabad’s M.L. Jaisimha and Tiger Pataudi. He also highlighted the need for better recognition and inclusion of former Ranji players within the Andhra Cricket Association (ACA), suggesting the removal of the 70-year age restriction for membership and advocating for automatic membership with voting rights for all former state players. Patel noted that many former players are not members of the Indian Cricketers Association due to various reasons.
The group demonstrated their ongoing support for the cricket community by recently contributing to the medical expenses of a former Ranji cricketer, Ch. Shankar. The ACA currently provides a monthly stipend of ₹10,000 to former players. Patel stressed the importance of recognizing those who played for the state, arguing that outstation players may not have the same level of commitment. The reunion served as a poignant reminder of the dedication and sacrifices made by these cricketers, and underscored the ongoing need for better support and recognition of former players’ contributions to the sport.
