**Kozhikode, Kerala, December 5, 2024** – A significant diesel leak at the Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) depot in Elathur, Kozhikode, triggered a protest by local residents and members of the Democratic Youth Federation of India on Wednesday. Approximately five barrels of diesel leaked into nearby drains following emergency maintenance work at the depot, prompting concerns about environmental safety and negligence.
The incident, reported around 5:30 p.m., saw local residents and HPCL workers collaboratively collecting the spilled fuel using buckets and bottles. Protesters accused HPCL of negligence, claiming that similar leaks have occurred previously despite being reported to authorities, including the Public Works Department. They further alleged that helpline numbers listed on the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas website were non-functional.
Police intervened to ensure safety and manage the situation. Police sources indicated that a malfunctioning overflow alert mechanism may have caused the leak. HPCL workers were reportedly upset and unwilling to comment amidst the public outcry. The protesters demanded strong legal action against those responsible for the incident.
