Thu Dec 05 13:57:34 UTC 2024: ## Congress Steps In to Resolve Thrikkakara Municipality Power-Sharing Dispute

**Kochi, December 5, 2024** – The Ernakulam District Congress Committee (DCC) has intervened in a power-sharing dispute within the Thrikkakara municipality, ordering two standing committee chairpersons to resign. Unni Kakkanad (Health) and Suneera Feroz (Welfare) have been instructed to step down to fulfill a prior intra-party agreement, making way for Independent councillor Varghese Plassery and Congress councillor Haseena Ummer respectively.

The DCC president, Mohammed Shiyas, stated that while they initially refrained from interfering, the delay in implementing the agreement prompted their intervention. The Thrikkakara Congress block president will now oversee the enforcement of this decision. A similar planned replacement for the development standing committee chairperson was dropped after the intended replacement voted against the UDF in a recent election.

Meanwhile, the DCC also reprimanded two councillors for consistently missing standing committee meetings. This action follows the disqualification of Congress councillor and former municipal chairperson Ajitha Thankappan for failing to attend education standing committee meetings for three consecutive months. Ms. Thankappan has applied for reinstatement and expects approval at the next council meeting on December 10th. Her disqualification was based on Section 91 (k) of the Kerala Municipality Act.
