Wed Dec 04 15:39:07 UTC 2024: ## BJP Rebel Leader’s Defiance Unexpectedly Bolsters His Position
**Bengaluru, December 4, 2024** – A disciplinary action against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) rebel leader Basanagouda R. Patil Yatnal has backfired, strengthening his position within the party. Instead of expulsion, growing calls within the BJP advocate for Mr. Yatnal to be given a prominent role at either the state or national level.
Mr. Yatnal, who openly challenged state party president B.Y. Vijayendra, submitted a response to the party’s central disciplinary committee, denying any anti-party activities. He maintains his actions were aimed at combating corruption and dynastic politics within the BJP. He further solidified his position by meeting with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh alongside a delegation of fellow rebel leaders.
Sources within the BJP confirm that Mr. Yatnal enjoys the support of several senior leaders, including influential Lingayat figures. A recent meeting of Karnataka MPs saw several members opposing his expulsion and urging action against Mr. Vijayendra’s perceived one-sided approach. The upcoming change in national BJP president and subsequent organizational restructuring is expected to provide an opportunity to accommodate Mr. Yatnal. While his supporters advocate for Mr. Vijayendra’s removal, former Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa has called for reconciliation and unity within the party.
Meanwhile, Mr. Vijayendra launched a campaign on the waqf land issue, mirroring a parallel campaign already initiated by Mr. Yatnal’s faction. Leader of the Opposition R. Ashok, known for his closeness to the Yediyurappa faction, met with BJP national president J.P. Nadda, expressing hope for an amicable resolution before the Assembly session begins on December 9th. Mr. Ashok’s involvement highlights the complexity of the internal power struggle and the concern that it could disrupt the upcoming legislative session. The final decision rests with the BJP high command.
