**Chennai, India (December 6, 2024)** – The Lalit Kala Akademi in Chennai buzzed with activity yesterday as “Spotlight on the South,” a vibrant art exhibition showcasing over 200 works by more than 60 artists from the Deccan region, opened its doors. The event, a precursor to the Madras Art Weekend (December 12-15), drew a large crowd of artists, patrons, and well-wishers, painting a lively picture in contrast to the usual quietude associated with art galleries.
The exhibition, organized by Madras Art Weekend in association with The Hindu’s Made of Chennai, aims to provide a platform for emerging and established artists who may lack wider representation. A diverse range of artwork is on display, including paintings, sculptures, installations, and photography, offering a rich tapestry of artistic styles and perspectives. Works highlighted include Ashwin J Chandran’s quintessential Chennai streetscape, Rohini Mani’s pensive portrayal of a woman, and Ezhilarasan Ezhumale’s imposing stone sculpture.
Advocate-General of Tamil Nadu, P.S. Raman, who inaugurated the event, lauded the initiative, stating that it enhances Chennai’s already prominent position as a cultural capital, particularly in the performing arts. Dharanidharan Selvam, national spokesperson for the DMK, also attended the opening.
Curator Upasana Asrani emphasized the exhibition’s goal of providing a platform for artists deserving recognition but lacking the resources to gain wider exposure. She noted that several participating artists are exhibiting their work in a gallery for the first time.
“Spotlight on the South” runs until December 10th at the Lalit Kala Akademi in Egmore, Chennai, from 11 am to 7 pm daily.
