Thu Dec 05 16:33:43 UTC 2024: ## UnitedHealthcare CEO Gunned Down in Manhattan; Suspect at Large
**NEW YORK, NY** – Brian Thompson, 50, CEO of UnitedHealthcare, was fatally shot Wednesday morning in a premeditated attack in Midtown Manhattan. The unidentified gunman, described as a white male wearing a tan jacket, black mask, and black-and-white sneakers, remains at large.
Police recovered three discharged shell casings from the scene, each bearing the words “deny,” “defend,” and “depose,” meticulously written in Sharpie. Investigators are exploring whether this relates to the industry criticism of insurance companies employing “delay, deny, and defend” tactics to avoid claims.
The shooting occurred around 6:45 a.m. outside the Hilton Midtown hotel, where Thompson was scheduled to attend a conference. Security footage shows the suspect lying in wait before shooting Thompson multiple times. The suspect then fled on a bicycle towards Central Park.
A search warrant was executed at a building on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, believed to be where the suspect spent the night before the shooting. Police also recovered a cellphone near the crime scene and evidence from a Starbucks the suspect visited 20 minutes prior, where he paid in cash. The NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch described the attack as “premeditated and preplanned.”
While police haven’t confirmed a motive, Thompson’s wife revealed that he had received threats. Investigators are reviewing UnitedHealthcare files for records of threats or disgruntled employees. The NYPD is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the suspect’s arrest. The investigation is ongoing.
