Tue Dec 03 15:49:04 UTC 2024: ## Connecticut Woman Arrested in Hit-and-Run Death of Indian Student

**NEW HAVEN, CT –** Jill Augelli, 41, has been arrested and charged with evading responsibility resulting in death in connection with the October 2023 hit-and-run death of Priyanshu Agwal, a 23-year-old University of New Haven graduate student. Agwal, who was just months from completing his master’s degree in business analytics, was struck while operating an electric scooter.

The arrest, announced Monday by New Haven Police, follows a year-long investigation. Police Chief Karl Jacobson stated that initial evidence was insufficient for immediate charges, but subsequent investigation, including GPS data from Augelli’s phone placing her near the scene and forensic evidence linking Agwal’s DNA to her vehicle, led to her apprehension. The vehicle involved was found the day after the incident in Naugatuck.

Agwal’s brother, Aman, spoke at the press conference, expressing his ongoing grief and anger at the driver’s failure to stop after the collision. New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker described Agwal as a vibrant young man with a bright future, highlighting the tragic loss and the family’s generous decision to donate Agwal’s heart, giving life to another.

Augelli is being held on a $100,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in New Haven Superior Court on Tuesday. Mayor Elicker used the opportunity to emphasize the importance of responsible driving and the consequences of fleeing the scene of an accident. The case underscores the determination of New Haven law enforcement to pursue justice even in complex hit-and-run investigations.
