Wed Dec 04 07:20:00 UTC 2024: ## Wisconsin Linebacker Leon Lowery Re-Enters Transfer Portal

**MADISON, Wis.** – Leon Lowery, Wisconsin Badgers outside linebacker, announced Sunday he will re-enter the NCAA transfer portal on December 9th, seeking a new opportunity for his final year of collegiate eligibility. Lowery, who had a whirlwind recruitment process last year involving multiple commitments and NIL agent hirings, saw limited success in his one season at Wisconsin.

Despite starting 11 of 12 games, Lowery’s production (29 tackles, one sack, four quarterback hurries) paled in comparison to his previous season at Syracuse where he recorded 46 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, and 3.5 sacks. He attributed the drop in performance to a scheme mismatch, stating that Wisconsin’s defensive approach, which involved more time with his hand in the dirt, didn’t suit his playing style.

In an interview with The Athletic, Lowery emphasized that his decision was not a reflection on the Wisconsin coaching staff or program, but rather a strategic move to find a better fit for his remaining year. He expressed gratitude for his time at Wisconsin, highlighting the positive relationships he forged with coaches and teammates, but maintained his desire to play in a system that utilizes his skills as a stand-up edge rusher.

Lowery confirmed that he had discussed his future with Wisconsin’s position coach, Matt Mitchell, who reportedly wanted him to stay. Despite this, Lowery feels his best option is to explore other programs that align with his preferred style of play. He plans to finish the semester in Madison before moving on. He described his ideal next program as one that uses a scheme allowing him to play on the edge, where he’s been most effective throughout his football career. He is confident in his abilities as an experienced and intelligent player ready to contribute immediately to his next team.
