Wed Dec 04 15:51:59 UTC 2024: ## Heavy Rains Slash Pollachi Cattle Trade by ₹2 Crore

**COIMBATORE, December 4, 2024** – Torrential rains across Tamil Nadu and neighboring states have severely impacted the Pollachi cattle shandy, causing a significant drop in trade. The usually bustling market, which typically sees 3,000-4,000 cattle traded daily, has witnessed a drastic reduction to 1,500, resulting in a ₹2 crore loss in revenue.

The decline is attributed to several factors. Heavy downpours have prevented cattle owners from bringing their animals to market, while Kerala buyers – who account for 90% of Pollachi’s cattle sales, primarily for beef – have largely ceased their visits due to the inclement weather. The beginning of the Karthigai month, a period when many Ayyappa devotees observe vegetarianism, has further dampened demand.

Affected areas in Tamil Nadu include Thanjavur, Orathanadu, Tirunelveli, Pattukottai, Dindigul, Thenai, Mapparai, Neyveli, and Madurai. The overall trade, previously valued at over ₹4 crore, has plummeted to ₹1.5 crore. The reduced trade impacts cattle owners from Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Karnataka who regularly participate in the Tuesday and Thursday Pollachi cattle shandy.
