Wed Dec 04 08:28:43 UTC 2024: ## Golden Temple Shooting: SAD Leader Sukhbir Badal Escapes Unharmed

**Amritsar, Punjab –** Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Sukhbir Singh Badal escaped unharmed Wednesday after a man opened fire on him while he was performing community service (“seva”) at the Golden Temple. The incident, which has sparked outrage and raised serious security concerns, occurred as Badal, sitting in a wheelchair, served as a “sevadar” (volunteer).

A video of the attack shows the assailant, identified as Narayan Singh Chaura, approaching Badal and firing a pistol before being apprehended by security personnel and others present. The bullet struck a wall, missing Badal.

Police confirmed the arrest of Chaura, describing him as a former militant who had crossed into Pakistan in 1984, allegedly involved in smuggling weapons and explosives, and authored seditious literature. He also reportedly has a past conviction and involvement in the Burail jailbreak case.

ADCP Harpal Singh stated that security arrangements were adequate, while acknowledging the attempted attack. However, criticism has been directed at the Punjab government, specifically Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, for the security lapse.

SAD leader Daljit Singh Cheema expressed gratitude that Badal was unharmed and called for a high-level judicial inquiry into the incident, describing it as a “big conspiracy.” He highlighted Badal’s service as a “chowkidar” (guard) at the temple’s entrance at the time of the shooting.

Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring also condemned the incident, blaming the state government for negligence and demanding strict punishment for the assailant. He added that while there may be anger towards Badal, resorting to violence is unacceptable.

The attack comes just days after Badal began performing penance at the Golden Temple, following a religious punishment (“tankhah”) issued by Sikh clergy for actions during his party’s previous tenure in government. This penance involved performing community service, including washing dishes and cleaning shoes.
