**Singapore** – Singapore Airlines (SIA) announced a significant S$1.1 billion investment to upgrade the cabins of its 41 Airbus A350-900 long-haul and ultra long-range aircraft by 2030. This ambitious project, expected to commence in Q2 2026, signals a shift away from the delayed Boeing 777-9 program and marks a significant upgrade to SIA’s long-haul experience.
While details remain scarce, leaked patent filings and official teasers reveal key features of the new Business Class seats. Most notably, SIA will finally introduce fully enclosed suites with doors, a feature now standard among competitors. The design will utilize a staggered configuration, abandoning the previous “flip-over” bed mechanism in favor of a recline-to-flat design. This will provide passengers with a more natural sleeping position parallel to the aisle and improved privacy.
Although the exact seat manufacturer remains unconfirmed, speculation points towards a design similar to Safran’s Unity seat, also used by Japan Airlines and Qantas. However, SIA emphasizes the design will be bespoke and not an off-the-shelf product. The new seats are expected to offer improved storage, potentially including personal lockers for valuables.
Technological upgrades are also anticipated, with features such as 4K screens, USB-C ports with high-wattage charging capabilities, and Bluetooth audio connectivity likely included. While the introduction of wireless charging is considered probable, concerns exist about power output and placement efficiency.
The upgrade is a significant investment in improving the passenger experience, however, concerns have been raised that due to delays and the rapid pace of innovation within the industry, the new Business Class offering might appear somewhat dated upon launch in 2026. More detailed information is expected closer to the launch date.
