**New Delhi, December 4, 2024** – Cyclone Fengal has caused widespread destruction across Tamil Nadu, prompting urgent calls for central government intervention. DMK leader T.R. Baalu, speaking in the Lok Sabha, detailed the extensive damage inflicted by the cyclone, urging the Prime Minister to dispatch an assessment team to the affected areas.
Mr. Baalu reported that 12 people have died and 15 million people have been impacted across 14 districts, including Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Cuddalore, Tiruvannamalai, and Chengalpattu. The cyclone has resulted in significant infrastructure damage: 9,576 kilometers of roads, 1,847 small bridges, 2,416 huts, 721 houses, and 963 cattle have been lost. Furthermore, thousands of schools, Anganwadi centers, panchayat buildings, and community centers have been damaged.
Congress MP Manickam Tagore echoed the call for assistance for Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Thoothukudi MP Kanimozhi added that the Chief Minister has requested ₹2,000 crore in relief funds, urging for its immediate release. The scale of destruction underscores the urgent need for a comprehensive assessment and swift disbursement of aid to the affected region.
