**NEW DELHI** – The 2024 Indian Lok Sabha elections delivered a mixed bag, defying pre-election predictions and showcasing the unpredictable nature of the Indian electorate, according to Dr. Sandeep Shastri, National Coordinator of the Lokniti Network. While the BJP-led NDA secured significant wins, falling short of its ambitious target of 400+ seats, the INDIA coalition exceeded expectations, preventing a BJP landslide and forming a credible opposition.
The BJP, aiming for a 370+ seat count for its party and 400+ for the NDA, saw its strategy hampered by losses in key states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Rajasthan, and Maharashtra. Despite strong performances in Odisha, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh, the party’s final seat count fell to 240, a significant drop from its 2019 tally of 303.
The INDIA coalition, plagued by internal conflicts and a lack of cohesive strategy, saw its numbers increase, allowing the Congress to regain the position of Leader of the Opposition. However, setbacks in several state-level elections, including Haryana, highlighted the coalition’s vulnerabilities. The alliance’s performance varied widely across states, reflecting the growing importance of regional politics.
Subsequent state assembly elections further underscored the fluctuating political landscape. The BJP secured a resounding victory in Maharashtra, while the INDIA coalition managed to retain power in Jharkhand, largely due to its strong performance in tribal areas. In Jammu and Kashmir, a coalition of the National Conference and Congress won, though a divide between the Jammu and Kashmir Valley regions was apparent.
Dr. Shastri concludes that 2024 demonstrated the complexity of Indian politics, with each electoral outcome influenced by a multitude of social, economic, and political factors. The year showcased the “diversity dividend” of the Indian voter, highlighting the increasing significance of individual states in shaping national politics.
