Tue Dec 03 20:02:04 UTC 2024: ## Namibia Elects First Female President Amidst Opposition Disputes
**Windhoek, Namibia –** Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, the vice president of Namibia, has made history by becoming the country’s first female president. The 72-year-old secured victory in Tuesday’s presidential election with 57% of the vote, securing a continued hold on power for the ruling South West Africa People’s Organisation (SWAPO) party. SWAPO has governed Namibia since its independence from South Africa in 1990.
Nandi-Ndaitwah’s win defied predictions of a runoff. Her past includes involvement in the underground independence movement during the 1970s. She assumed the vice presidency following the death of President Hage Geingob in February of this year.
However, the election results are being contested. Opposition parties have rejected the outcome, citing significant technical issues such as ballot paper shortages that led to an extension of voting until November 30th. They claim this extension was illegal and have vowed to challenge the results in court.
