Wed Dec 04 15:42:52 UTC 2024: ## Nellore Hospital Fined ₹61.62 Lakh for Medical Negligence

**NELLORE, December 4, 2024** – The Nellore District Consumer Court has ordered Medicover Hospital (formerly Simhapuri Hospital) to pay a hefty fine of ₹61.62 lakh for medical negligence resulting in a patient’s complete loss of vision in one eye and severe health complications.

The case involved Chevuru Suresh Babu, a panchayat secretary from Sullurpet, who underwent sinusitis surgery at the hospital in May 2017. Following the procedure, Babu experienced severe complications, including complete loss of vision in his left eye, swelling, and drooping eyelid. He subsequently required multiple surgeries at other hospitals in Chennai to address the complications.

The court, presided over by Judge Ginka Reddy Sekhar, found Medicover Hospital negligent, citing a lack of essential medical records and operation notes. The judge considered medical opinions and evidence presented by Babu, concluding that the hospital’s doctors failed to provide adequate care. The ₹61.62 lakh fine includes ₹21.62 lakh for Babu’s medical expenses incurred at other hospitals. Medicover Hospital denied all allegations.
