**VISAKHAPATNAM, December 4, 2024** – The Indian Medical Association (IMA) Visakhapatnam Branch held its annual meeting, installing a new executive committee for 2024-2026. The event also featured presentations on the growing problem of obesity in India.
Dr. T. Narayana Rao, former professor of surgery at Andhra Medical College, highlighted India’s alarming obesity rates, noting the country ranks third globally. He estimated that 40% of India’s population is obese, significantly increasing the risk of mortality from conditions like diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and Alzheimer’s disease.
Dr. G. Krishna Babu, Professor and Head of Community Medicine at Maharaja Institute of Medical Sciences, Vizianagaram, also contributed to the scientific presentations.
The meeting was attended by key figures including Dr. I. Vani (President, IMA Visakhapatnam), Dr. MVV Murali Mohan (Secretary), Dr. Bose (General Secretary, IMA AP), Dr. T. Ravi Raju (Nephrologist), JC Naidu (President, IMA AP), and N. Subrahmanyam (Past President).
