Wed Dec 04 12:38:12 UTC 2024: ## Manipur Violence Inquiry Extended
**Imphal, India –** The Indian government has extended the deadline for a commission of inquiry investigating the widespread violence in Manipur. The commission, headed by former Gauhati High Court Chief Justice Ajai Lamba, will now submit its report by May 20, 2025, instead of the previous November 20, 2024 deadline.
The violence, which began on May 3, 2023, has resulted in at least 258 deaths and thousands displaced. The commission, established on June 4, 2023, is tasked with investigating the causes of the conflict between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities, examining potential lapses in government response, and addressing individual complaints.
The extension was announced by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) following a recommendation from the Manipur government. The initial six-month deadline proved insufficient to complete the comprehensive investigation. The commission will continue its probe into the sequence of events leading to the violence and assess the adequacy of measures taken to prevent and control the unrest. Protests against the ongoing investigation continue, as evidenced by recent demonstrations in Imphal.
