Wed Dec 04 05:59:06 UTC 2024: ## Bhopal Gas Tragedy: 40 Years of Unfulfilled Justice

**Bhopal, India** – Forty years after the devastating Bhopal gas tragedy, survivors and the families of victims continue their fight for justice, a fight hampered by a protracted and seemingly endless legal battle. The December 1984 Union Carbide gas leak claimed at least 5,479 lives and affected over 500,000 others, leaving a legacy of severe health problems.

Despite convictions in 2010 for seven Union Carbide officials, the sentences – a mere two years and a small fine – were widely considered inadequate. Appeals for harsher punishments have been rejected, while appeals for acquittal by the convicted linger, with nine judges presiding over the appeals process since 2010. The case has involved a staggering 28 judges over nearly 25 years.

This agonizingly slow legal process has caused further suffering for victims, many of whom have died awaiting justice. Legal experts are now urging the High Court to expedite proceedings by assigning a single judge to the case. As the 40th anniversary passes, the lack of meaningful accountability remains a stark reminder of the ongoing injustice faced by those affected by the Bhopal Gas Tragedy.
