**Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, December 4, 2024** – A moderate earthquake shook Andhra Pradesh and Telangana states this morning, causing widespread panic and prompting residents to flee their homes. The tremor, estimated at 5.3 on the Richter scale, originated near Medaram in Mulugu district, Telangana.
The earthquake struck around 7:27 AM, lasting several seconds. Reports of shaking were widespread, including major cities like Vijayawada and Hyderabad. In Vijayawada, NTR district, people rushed out of homes and apartments in fear. Similar scenes unfolded across several districts in both states, including Jaggayyapeta and surrounding villages in Andhra Pradesh, and numerous areas in Telangana, such as Warangal, Khammam, Karimnagar, and even Greater Hyderabad. Residents in Rajamahendravaram, Eluru, and Kakinada also reported feeling the tremor, with some describing objects falling from shelves.
The earthquake’s impact was felt across a wide area. In Andhra Pradesh, tremors were reported in Eluru, Nuzvidu, Penuganchiprolu, and several mandals including Reddigudem, Nandigama, and Kanchikacherla. Reports also emerged from Amalapuram, Kunanapuram, VR Puram, and Etapak mandals.
Telangana experienced shaking across the districts of Warangal, Khammam, Karimnagar and Peddapalli. Areas in and around Greater Hyderabad – including Borabanda, Rahmat Nagar, and several other localities – felt the tremor. Villages in Suryapet and Nalgonda districts were also affected. In Mahbubabad district, the shaking was reportedly strong enough to knock people off their chairs.
While initial reports suggest no major damage or casualties, the earthquake caused significant fear and disruption. Authorities are assessing the situation and further details are awaited. The tremor comes four months after a significant storm in Medaram, which saw thousands of trees uprooted. The connection, if any, between the two events is yet to be determined.
