**WENCHANG, Hainan Island** – China successfully launched its new Long March 12 rocket late Tuesday, marking a significant advancement in the nation’s space program. The 62-meter-tall rocket, boasting a diameter of 3.8 meters – considerably wider than previous models – lifted off from the Wenchang spaceport at 10:25 PM local time. This larger size allows for a 30% increase in propellant capacity, significantly boosting its payload capabilities.
The Long March 12, a two-stage rocket powered by kerosene and liquid oxygen, deployed two “technology test satellites” into orbit. While specifics about the satellites remain undisclosed, the increased carrying capacity is expected to play a crucial role in China’s ambitious plans to construct large-scale broadband megaconstellations. The rocket can deliver approximately 12 tonnes to low Earth orbit and over 6 tonnes to sun-synchronous orbit.
According to Wu Jialin, an engineer with the Shanghai Academy of Spaceflight Technology, the increased diameter distinguishes the Long March 12 from its predecessors, most of which have a diameter of 3.35 meters. This launch represents a major step forward in China’s efforts to enhance its space launch capabilities and solidify its position as a leading spacefaring nation.
