NEW YORK, NY – Brian Thompson, the 50-year-old CEO of UnitedHealthcare, the largest private insurer in the US, was fatally shot this morning in Midtown Manhattan. The shooting occurred around 7:00 AM EST outside the Hilton Hotel, where Thompson was scheduled to speak at an investor conference.
Police say the suspect, wearing a ski mask and cream jacket, appeared to be waiting for Thompson and fled the scene after the shooting. Investigators have video footage of the incident but have yet to determine a motive. Nothing was taken from the victim. The suspect remains at large.
Thompson, who had been CEO since April 2021 and earned $10.2 million last year, joined UnitedHealthcare in 2004 and held several leadership positions within the company. Following the shooting, UnitedHealth Group, UnitedHealthcare’s parent company, immediately cancelled its investor conference.
The Hilton Hotel released a statement expressing sadness and offering condolences. The NYPD is investigating. This is a developing story.
