Wed Dec 04 16:08:51 UTC 2024: ## UnitedHealthcare CEO Fatally Shot in Targeted Attack Outside Manhattan Hotel

**New York, NY** – Brian Thompson, 50, the chief executive of UnitedHealthcare, was fatally shot in a targeted attack outside the New York Hilton Midtown on Wednesday morning. The shooting occurred around 6:45 a.m. as Thompson arrived for the company’s annual investor conference.

Police say the gunman, described by witnesses as wearing either a cream-colored jacket or all black clothing, a black face mask, and a gray backpack, approached Thompson and fired multiple shots from close range before fleeing on foot and then a bicycle. Video surveillance confirms the gunman acted alone. The NYPD is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. Two surveillance photos will be released, one showing the gunman with a firearm and another showing him on the bicycle.

Thompson was transported to Mount Sinai West, where he was pronounced dead. The investor conference continued for a short time before being abruptly halted after news of the shooting spread. UnitedHealth Group CEO Andrew Witty cited a “very serious medical situation.”

Thompson’s sister-in-law, Elena Reveiz, described him as a “good person” and a loving father of two. Flags at UnitedHealthcare’s Minnesota headquarters have been lowered to half-staff. The shooting has sent shockwaves through the company and the broader healthcare community, with expressions of grief and disbelief coming from colleagues, Mayor Jacob Frey of Minneapolis, and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. The NYPD will hold a press conference at 11:30 a.m. to provide further updates. The incident did not disrupt New York City’s public transportation system.
