Tue Dec 03 18:44:24 UTC 2024: ## Bhopal Marks 40th Anniversary of Gas Tragedy with Grief and Protests

**Bhopal, India** – Forty years after the devastating Bhopal gas tragedy, survivors and their families gathered to commemorate the thousands of lives lost and to renew their calls for justice. On December 2-3, 1984, a Union Carbide factory leak released a deadly cloud of methyl isocyanate, causing immeasurable suffering and leaving a legacy of health problems that persists to this day.

Marking the somber anniversary, several organizations held memorial events, including torch rallies and remembrance gatherings at the memorial site near the former Union Carbide factory. Participants laid flowers and paid tribute to the victims.

A women’s group, the Bhopal Gas Peedit Mahila Udyog Sangathan, used the occasion to highlight lingering questions. Their posters questioned the government on unfulfilled promises of monthly pensions for victims and the lack of employment opportunities for survivors and their children. They also demanded an expedited resolution to the ongoing Supreme Court case, pressing for the punishment of those responsible for the disaster.

The events, attended by hundreds, mostly women, served as a stark reminder of the ongoing trauma and the fight for justice that continues four decades after the tragedy. The deep scars of that horrific night remain visible, both physically and emotionally, for the city of Bhopal.
