**Hyderabad, Telangana, December 4, 2024** – A 5.3 magnitude earthquake struck central and northern India this morning at 7:27 a.m. IST, causing tremors felt across several states. The epicenter, located 40 kilometers below ground in the Eturnagaram forest area of Telangana, was pinpointed by the National Centre for Seismology (NCS) as 185 km NNE of Nalgonda and 219 km ENE of Hyderabad.
Residents in Warangal, Bhadrachalam, Godavarkhani, Khammam, Vijayawada, Bhupalpally, Chandanagar, Nallagandla, and other parts of Telangana reported feeling the tremors, which lasted for several seconds. Reports of shaking furniture also emerged from various locations. Even in the distant Maharashtra districts of Nagpur and Gadchiroli, mild tremors were felt.
While the NCS located the quake’s origin in the Eturnagaram forests, the US Geological Survey placed it near the Godavari River in the same general area. The strongest earthquake previously recorded in the region was a 6.2 magnitude quake on September 30, 1993.
