Tue Dec 03 16:00:00 UTC 2024: **Lake-Effect Snow Causes Travel Chaos in Southwest Michigan and Northern Indiana**

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – A powerful lake-effect snowstorm is causing significant travel disruptions across southwest Michigan and northern Indiana. Multiple crashes have been reported along the I-94 corridor from Van Buren County to Stevensville in Berrien County, Michigan.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for Berrien and Cass Counties in Michigan and St. Joseph County in Indiana, effective until 10 a.m. Tuesday. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for Elkhart and LaPorte Counties in Indiana, and St. Joseph County in Michigan, during the same period.

Snow, initially light, is expected to intensify throughout Monday afternoon, with a band of heavy snowfall predicted overnight into Tuesday morning. Some areas of Berrien and Cass Counties could see upwards of 8 inches of accumulation by Tuesday morning, while most will receive 4-6 inches. Southern areas are expected to receive less snowfall.

Authorities warn that Tuesday morning’s commute will likely be severely impacted by snow-covered and icy roads. Snow is expected to taper off late Tuesday morning, leaving behind frigid temperatures. The possibility of further lake-effect snow later in the week remains, following a mid-week system bringing a mix of rain and snow. Drivers are urged to exercise extreme caution and avoid unnecessary travel.
