**Chandigarh, India** – The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) Working Committee has postponed a decision on party president Sukhbir Singh Badal’s resignation, announced Saturday after the Akal Takht declared him “Tankhaiya” (guilty of religious misconduct). The committee will consult with district presidents and SGPC members before making a final determination.
Badal’s resignation, following a string of electoral defeats and pressure from within the party, including from prominent figures like former MP Prem Singh Chandumajra and former SGPC chief Bibi Jagir Kaur, has cleared the way for a new party leader. His son, Sarabjit Singh, youth wing president, threatened to resign should the committee accept Badal’s resignation.
Pro-Badal party workers demonstrated outside the committee meeting, pleading for the resignation to be rejected. The Working Committee will meet again on November 18th to discuss the resignation, along with other party matters including upcoming elections and a new membership drive. Badal served as party president since 2008, succeeding his late father, five-time Punjab Chief Minister Prakash Singh Badal.
