**Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam** – A Vietnamese court has upheld the death sentence for Truong My Lan, chairwoman of Van Thinh Phat Holdings Group, for her role in a massive $12 billion embezzlement scheme. While the High People’s Court rejected Lan’s appeal, it offered a glimmer of hope: a commutation to life imprisonment if she repays 75% of the embezzled funds.
Lan, 68, was found guilty of orchestrating Vietnam’s largest-ever financial fraud, a crime that involved illegally controlling Saigon Commercial Bank (SCB) and caused a run on the institution. The fraud, equal to nearly 3% of Vietnam’s 2022 GDP, impacted an estimated 36,000 victims and sparked rare public protests.
Prosecutors argued that the scale of the crime and its devastating impact on the economy warranted the death penalty. While Lan’s lawyer cited her admission of guilt and partial repayment as mitigating factors, the court deemed these insufficient to overturn the sentence.
The ruling comes amidst Vietnam’s intensified anti-corruption campaign, dubbed “Blazing Furnace,” which has ensnared numerous high-profile business executives and officials. Lan still has the option to pursue a cassation or retrial. The case continues to raise significant concerns about the country’s economic stability and the potential consequences of large-scale financial fraud.
