Tue Dec 03 15:03:10 UTC 2024: ## Arab Americans Emerge as Powerful Political Force After Democratic Primary Loss

**DETROIT, MI** – The recent Democratic Party losses in the November 5th elections have overshadowed a significant political development: the rise of Arab American political activism. For the first time, this 3.5 million-strong community demonstrated considerable electoral influence, challenging the established political landscape and impacting the outcome in key swing states.

This surge in political engagement stems from decades of grassroots mobilization, starting with participation in Jesse Jackson’s presidential campaigns in the 1980s. The 9/11 attacks and subsequent backlash further galvanized the community, pushing them to overcome historical political quiescence.

“We were no longer silent,” stated Omar Kurdi, founder of Arab Americans of Cleveland. “We refused to live in fear of politics. We no longer accept crumbs, but want our share of the pie.”

This resolve led to increased representation at all levels of government, from local councils to Congress, with elected officials like Rashida Tlaib inspiring a new generation of activists. Local political successes provided crucial experience in lobbying, coalition-building, and public advocacy.

The culmination of this effort was the “Uncommitted” movement during the 2024 Democratic primaries. Frustrated by the Biden administration’s unwavering support for Israel’s actions in Gaza and Lebanon, Arab American activists, alongside other progressive groups, leveraged their voting power. Hundreds of thousands of voters in key states cast “uncommitted” ballots, sending a powerful message and securing 30 Uncommitted delegates at the Democratic National Convention.

While the movement’s precise impact on the election results is debated, its success in raising awareness of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and pushing for a change in Democratic Party policy is undeniable.

“We are liberated from the Democrats who took us for granted,” declared one Arab-American activist. “We are now a swing vote officially.”

The future remains uncertain, with the possibility of increased influence over both Democrats and Republicans. The establishment of Political Action Committees (PACs) and fundraising are key challenges. Nevertheless, the emergence of a unified, nationally impactful Arab-American political force marks a turning point, born from a desire for political inclusion and a commitment to social justice.
