Mon Dec 02 17:05:22 UTC 2024: ## Puducherry Villages Flooded After Dam Releases in Tamil Nadu
**Puducherry, December 2, 2024** – Heavy flooding has inundated several rural villages in Puducherry following the opening of the Sathanur dam in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruvannamalai district on Monday. The release of water caused the Thenpennaiyar river to swell dangerously, impacting the villages of Bahour, Arachikuppam, Sooriankuppam, Manamedu, and Irulansanthai.
The situation was exacerbated by the simultaneous release of water from the Veedur dam in Villupuram district, causing the Sankaraparani river to overflow. A Revenue official stated that the District Administration has deployed the Army, NDRF teams, and Puducherry Fire and Rescue Service personnel for evacuation and rescue efforts. While approximately 300 people have been moved from Arachikuppam, many residents are reluctant to leave their homes. The administration has requested additional Army units to assist in the ongoing operation.
