Tue Dec 03 09:00:32 UTC 2024: ## Shinde Upset Over BJP’s CM Choice, Athawale Suggests Deputy CM Role

**New Delhi:** Political tensions are simmering in Maharashtra as the BJP’s choice for Chief Minister following the Mahayuti’s landslide victory remains unannounced. Union Minister Ramdas Athawale revealed that Shiv Sena chief Eknath Shinde is reportedly upset over the BJP’s decision to claim the top post, reportedly offering him the Deputy Chief Minister position instead.

Athawale, citing the precedent of Devendra Fadnavis serving as Deputy CM under Shinde in the previous government despite the BJP holding a larger number of seats, suggested that Shinde accept the Deputy CM post or a significant position within the Mahayuti alliance. He stated that the BJP high command informed Shinde that they are not ready to give him the Chief Ministership again, citing their previous two-and-a-half-year term. The BJP is reportedly favoring Devendra Fadnavis for the Chief Minister’s position, though an official announcement is pending.

The BJP’s 132 newly elected MLAs are meeting today, with a final announcement expected by tomorrow. The swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for Thursday.

While Shinde has publicly stated he won’t obstruct government formation and left the decision to Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Shah, Sena leaders have been emphasizing Shinde’s role in the election victory. However, with the BJP’s commanding majority (132 seats) and the NCP’s reported support, Shinde’s leverage appears limited. The BJP, which previously installed Shinde as Chief Minister after his rebellion against Uddhav Thackeray, has made it clear it intends to hold the Chief Minister’s post this time. The Mahayuti alliance secured a total of 230 seats, with the Shiv Sena holding 57 and the NCP holding 41.
