**KOCHI, December 3, 2024** – Customs officials at Cochin International Airport intercepted 14 rare birds on Monday, December 2nd, preventing their illegal trafficking. The birds, reportedly hidden in plastic boxes within the checked baggage of two passengers arriving from Thailand on a Thai Airways flight, were discovered after officials heard unusual noises. Each bird is estimated to be worth between ₹25,000 and ₹2 lakh.
The passengers, residents of Thiruvananthapuram, allegedly received an offer of ₹75,000 to transport the birds. Forest officials have been notified and a case has been registered. The seizure highlights the ongoing struggle against wildlife trafficking in the region.
